2. Girls Cricket

Girls cricket is among the fastest growing sports in this country, and our club is at the forefront of this trend.

We are one of the few clubs that run 2 girls only teams, that train and play together. Recent success means we have been proclaimed “the best girls club in Bucks”. In 2020 our U15 Girls team achieved the title of Bucks County Champions.

As we begin planning for 2021 we are now in a position to grow the girls section further and we’re looking for more girls to join us, especially in the 10-13 age group. We will be running teams at U16 and U13 this year.

The girls do not exist solely as a separate entity within the club. While we offer them the chance to train and play together, they are also fully integrated into the club with many girls also playing in the boys teams and in the senior mens teams.

Come along to find out what all the FUN is about. Any enquiries or questions, please contact us at girls@chenies-cricket.org

The development of Girls' cricket at Chenies has been due to the driving force from our coaching and management team:

Nick Walker
Nick is the girls head coach. He works with the other coaches to deliver training that is both fun and technical. A difficult mix, but do ask the girls, as I’m sure they enjoy it!
Chenies have an amazing girls section, with 35-40 training regularly on a Friday evening between 6-8pm. Although we have two established groups, this season has shown an increase of around 25% in new joiners. We can cater for players that haven’t played hard ball before, as well as experienced players. We are delighted that this year Bucks cricket have introduced an U13s girls cricket league. It really does show that the focus is now rightly turning to the girls. We have a minimum of 10 plus fixtures for each age group, as well as encouraging the girls to play for the mixed age group leagues from U10s upwards, through to senior cricket.
We have a pedigree of bringing on players and for them to be selected for the Bucks county and development sides. This is from U11s through to Women’s cricket.
We currently offer prosecco cricket and next year, we are planning to start a women’s league team, so exciting times!
Nick has a daughter that plays in the U16s girls team and a son in the U19s. It was a highlight to play in the same team as his son for a couple of seasons. His son is now in the 1st XI and Nick captains the 3rd XI. The other highlight remains wining the girls U15 county cup last season. A tremendous day for the girls and the club. This really is a club that looks after the girls.

Julie Pickard
Julie went to her first cricket match at Lords with her Grandad back in 1969. It was a Test Match, England vs the West Indies. To keep her involved, her Grandad bought her a score card; Julie has been scoring cricket matches ever since.
Julie first got involved with Chenies in 2010 when both her daughters wanted to play cricket. Her husband, Michael, was quickly roped into coaching the U10 side and he started to play regularly for the Sunday XI. Michael is now the Chenies groundsman and Saturday 2nd XI Captain.
Julie was the Bucks W&G’s Manager for several years while her daughter played cricket for Bucks, as well as for Chenies Colts and Saturday 3rd XI.
Driven to get more girls involved in Cricket, Julie took a step outside the box and began baking cakes. Soon enough, every Sunday Colts training session became a social event for families, and more girls started to watch and eventually join in.
Julie has remained involved in promoting and encouraging Women and Girls cricket at Chenies, including setting up Prosecco Cricket.
Julie has her Coach Support Worker qualification as well as First Aid for Cricket.
Julie is also the Club Welfare Officer alongside James Herring.

Ton Godfrey
"My cricketing life started in the garden when I was six with my father who maintained batting is simple - all you need to do is stamp on it sniff it and keep your elbow out. With those words still ringing in my ears I’m happy to report I’m still playing partly because I am really looking forward to being on the same team as Alice and Poppy who are both allrounders! I’ve always been a batsmen and for about half the games I have been the wicketkeeper. Playing highlights include playing for Sussex schoolboys – scoring a hundred against a side that had the Jamaican opening bowlers in it, playing in the same side with Claire Taylor and Isa Guha – and hitting a six at Lords on the main square albeit Allan Lamb was the bowler!
My main contributions to cricket came off the field as I worked in Sports Marketing for 25years and mainly at the grassroots level although I used to represent Shane Warne and Merv Hughes. Somme of the highlights included setting up the MCC Spirit of Cricket programme in Primary and Secondary Schools across the country and shaping a Channel 4 community cricket programme which included raising finance and building inner city cricket pitches and combined beach cricket programmes with music concerts
